There are many skeletal remains strewn about Zion, most likely campers killed by the fallout referenced in Randall Clark's terminal entries.

Just take a couple guns and some basic armor. Zion has more than enough weapons, armors, etc. to keep you alive even if you don't bring your best gear. "I'll let my guns do the preaching." You kinda HAVE to do a loadout since the guy makes you adhere to a weight limit on you inventory before setting off.

You'll have to reliad your save and not kill Follows-Chalk if you want to do the story of Honest Hearts, which I would reccomend. But if youre happy with ylur decision for whatever reason, or cant turn back, you can still explore Zion. Half the charm is peicing together the survivalists story and finding the unique weapons/armor.
This discussion makes me reminisce on my playthrough of Honest Hearts. After the first assault of the White Legs at the beginning of the DLC, I accidentally sniped Follows-Chalk before he could talk with me, mistaking him for an enemy. This made every single npc I encountered hostile, including important ones such as Daniels and Joshua Graham.
I find that the exploration and aesthetics of Honest Hearts are overall much better than any of the other DLC (mostly), that the Survivalist's story/the Sorrow's background is perhaps one of the best in Fallout, and that Joshua Graham is for the most part an amazing addition to the game. That's as far as my praise for the DLC can go however.
