I think a lot of hand analysis is comparing your hand with the types of players you are playing against, and putting yourself in their shoes.
If there was a raise pre-flop and lots of callers and you have pocket 9s and the flop is J - K - 10, chances are you got out drawn.
On the other hand, if no one raised pre-flop, you might still be in luck.
Try putting your opponent on a hand and then ask yourself, "would they really have played that in this situation by called all those raises, etc?"

I can't say, in either situation, I'd feel comfortable (or want to be in the pot if it's costing me money) with 99. I just don't see it likely you're ever going to win that pot with cards alone, unless it's checked down - though of course a good bluff can win anything.
:shrugs: That flop with that hand is one I'd walk away from though, no hard feelings.

Basing it on a raise or not isn't everything. Some people will raise TT or better, others will raise T4.
You need to think about what the raiser's standards are, How many people are contesting pot (and their standards), your position, and so on.
