You are in the big blind with Q:diamonds:9:diamonds:. A slightly loose but otherwise typical player open-raises from middle position. Everyone folds to you. You call. The pot contains 4.5 small bets. The flop comes 10:spades: A:clubs: J:diamonds:. You have an open-ended straight draw and a backdoor flush draw. What do you do?

Bet/call

My thoughts:

Your bet could do a few things:
first, he has to fold if he has a PP lower than 10, I think he has a PP under ten (7's, 8's, 9's) atleast 1/8 times. So you're bet wins you 4.5SB(1/8) and the other 5/6 of the times he may call or raise. I think the small amount of fold equity combined with a good draw, makes bet/call the best choice

I dont know how well I analyzed the hand, and I didn't do any EV calculations (ex, how often he has to fold, flat call, or raise to make it +EV... you can loosely base these numbers off his AF?)

Check and Call a Bet.

I never like betting or raising on a draw.

I'm not entirely sure of the right answer. I think it's a close decision between check/fold and bet/call. Against a slightly loose (about 23% VP$IP) but not entirely fishy opponent, a semi-bluff might work often enough to be marginally profitable. In any case, our draw isn't that strong. We have eight outs to a straight, but we may end up splitting the pot if a king comes. When drawing to a straight, it's best to use both of your hole cards because you will not split the pot as often and your hand will be better disguised, thus improving your implied odds.

I should also mention that our preflop call was questionable. Hands like Q:diamonds:9:diamonds: do better in multiway pots. If one or two other players had entered the pot then a call would be correct.

I'll try to answer the other quizzes soon and possibly create some more.

You have to play strong draws aggressively in limit hold'em. You will often be a favorite to win the hand with two cards to come, in which case you are betting and raising for value. It's disappointing when these draws don't come in, but you will win more money in the long run by playing aggressively.

This quiz shows how to play a strong draw: http://www.blacksburgpoker.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=62.
