You are on the button with K:spades:K:hearts:. A middle player limps. You raise, both blinds fold, and the limper calls. The limper is extremely loose. He plays very aggressively before the flop; his post-flop play is passive, although he does bluff occasionally and will check-raise with his stronger hands. The flop is K:diamonds: Q:diamonds: J:diamonds:. He checks, you bet, and he calls. The turn is the A:diamonds:. Your opponent checks. What do you do?

Check. You don't need to worry about giving a free card; there are not many river cards that can hurt you if you're not already behind. If a free card helps anyone, it is you. You have nine outs to a full house which will probably be good if it hits. In addition, the K clubs will give you quads. Finally, checking may induce a bluff from your opponent on the river.

I would call a bet on the river from this guy.

We can't base our decision on the pot odds. Part of our reason for checking is to induce a bluff. When you try to induce a bluff, you're committing yourself to a call when/if your opponent bets.

At the same time, we don't have enough information to determine our chances of having the best hand. Loose-aggressive/passive players are very hard to read. Also, by checking the turn, we lost an opportunity to gain information about the opponent's hand. Since we can't narrow down his range of hands, the pot odds won't help us determine the EV of a call.

Here's an interesting question: What do we do if another diamond falls on the river and our opponent bets? The villian could be bluffing, but this time we can only win half the pot.

I have seen so many people make stupid plays when the board is a straight or a flush. I once saw someone bet on this board:

:diamA: :heartK: :clubK: :diamK: :spadeK:

The other player folded! Perhaps it wasn't such a dumb bet after all.
