As i read in one of the books:

"One of the most important factors in winning in poker is counting outs and calculating odds.

Everyone knows that. But no one bothers to learn"

LEARN TO calculate ODDS.

Heres the chart I use. The One Card column is based on one card to come, and means that the pot needs to be this many times what you must call, before your bet is already in the pot. Example: You have a flush draw and it is your turn to call a $5 bet. The pot needs to be $20 in order for it to be a break even call. This of course does not take into account implied odds and discounted outs, But is a good starting point. I just printed out this chart and out it beside my computer and used it for reference till I memorized it from use.

# Of Outs-------------------------One Card

20---------------------------------1
19---------------------------------1.5
18---------------------------------1.6
17---------------------------------1.8
16---------------------------------1.9
15(Flush draw and 2 overcards)-----2.1
14---------------------------------2.4
13---------------------------------2.6
12(Flush draw and 1 overcard)------3
11---------------------------------3.3
10---------------------------------3.7
9(Flush Draw)----------------------4
8( OESD)---------------------------5
7----------------------------------6
6(2 Overcards)---------------------7
5----------------------------------8
4(Gut Shot)------------------------11
3----------------------------------15
1----------------------------------46

Couldn't resist throwing in my buck two ninety five on this one. Do you suppose they don't calculate odds because they get caught up in the moment's emotion or do you suppose they just don't know how to calculate the odds?

My money is on emotion given all of the info on the Net about odds and especially how to calculate them in a NY minute. I've watched men older than me, throw away big bucks because they got emotionally involved. I bet you have too.

Tom:)

Learning to calculate the odds is a major part of winning in poker, but knowing the odds won't win you every hand. You have to be able to know when to fold, even when its against the odds, or when to check against the odds. Odds are helpful but relying solely on odds can hurt you in the long run!

I will interject a thought. This sounds like you are reading the players and that is always a good thing. If you know the players, IMHO, you are better off than knowing the odds.

Just a thought...:)

Yep.... If you know how others are likely to play, and know what to expect from them you are just as well off as knowing the odds. That is one of the major reasons its common for "unknown" players to make it late in big tournaments. When the "pros" dont know what to expect they get caught off guard..

I generally only play odds poker when I am multi-tabling, if I just single table (or if it's real life) I am generally better off bet reading them than odd calculating. Still if you are a newbie/can't read bets/people then you better learn how to odd calculate or else bye bye deposit for a house.

Imho, the best math is only as valuable as the players expierience allows.I spent a good deal of time playin without my gut involved. My stats suffered.A balanced and intelligent combo of these skills seems to be what seperates the high level players from the crowd. One of the most successful live players I know chooses to use the pot and implied odds as nothing more than a gut check. He may be the exception however, still working out my best balance.....pat

I'm not sure the maths is the MOST important thing to learn. Getting the right mindset and stopping yourself from tilting/being affected by swings etc. is way way more important imo.

You could be a maths genius and an awesome player, but if you can't control your emotions you're a gonner.
