I just started hosting Texas Holdem cash games and I need some information on my question. in a cash game a person chips are their own, so what is the rule on if a person would put some chips back (in their pocket) so they could at least hold on to their money to break even? is that fair or illegal?
in a cash game you can not take cash off the table. That means that if you win some hands you can't just put some of it in your pocket and play with the rest.
If you win and want to keep playing you have to give a chance to others at your whole stack not just a part of it.
What people do when they want to keep their buy money, is that they leave the game for one hour and then they can come back as a new player with the table's min and max buy in standards.
i hope that answered your question

A player is not allowed to take chips off of the table unless they are cashing out.
