I'm a newbe to this forum and after reading some of the posts,I decided to register. You folks are doing a great job here.
I played 15-30 limit in Southern Ca and Northern Ca for about 5 years in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Over that period of time I averaged about $20 an hour, played about 100 hours a month, never had a losing year but did have a few losing months. My life changed directions and I got away from poker for a long time.
I'm retired now and live in the Sacramento, Ca area and play low limit 4-8 nofoldem holdem at some of the local clubs out here. The skill level of most of the players in these games is very low. Typiical play is any two suited cards from any position, very little pre flop raising, ace,x from any position, and lots of chasing thru the river.
I've booked 100 hours over a period of 4 months and I'm actually losing about $5 an hour. The run of cards that I'm getting has been horrible and the bad beats keep coming. I'm beginning to think it's not a run of cards problem, the game is just not beatable. My question is what is a reasonable win expectation (hourly win rate) and is 100 disappointing hours enough time invested to become discouraged? My money management plan is to buy in for $100. If I lose it, I quit for the day. If I'm holding my own or winning, I'll put in about 3 hours of play. I have had so many occurances of being ahead about $100 and then losing it back and more that I now have a "when I'm ahead plan". If I reach a point when I'm $50 ahead, I'll quit if I fall back to zero so I can never have a losing session once I'm $50 ahead. If I'm $100 ahead I'll quit if i slip back to being $50 ahead and so on. I use thise silly plan to cope with what appears to be an awful run of cards.
My questions are:
1. what is a reasonable session average per hour for a good but not great holdem player in this type of game?
2. How many hours of play would I need to consider my results indicative of what I can expect my future results to be?
3. If a player with Ed Miller's skills were to play in a game like this, is it at all likely that he could experience a $5 an hour loss after 100 hours of play?
I look forard for your responses.
